Andros ist die nördlichste Insel der Kykladen. Auf einem Hügel mit Blick über die Bucht von Gavrio wurde in hellenistischer Zeit (4./3. Jahrhundert v. Chr.) der Rundturm von Aghios Petros vermutlich als Wach- und Schutzturm errichtet. Das ca. 20 Meter hohe Bauwerk ist noch heute sehr gut erhalten und kann im Rahmen einer landschaftlich schönen Wanderung gemeinsam mit einer neuzeitlichen Kapelle am Hang oberhalb des Turms besichtigt werden.
Schon 1894 machte sich eine Besuchergruppe um Wilhelm Dörpfeld (1853-1940, von 1886-1912 Direktor des DAI Athen, links außen) auf den Weg zum Turm. Der Herr auf dem Dach, auf das er über die vier Stockwerke umfassende Treppe im Turminnern gelangt war, ist leider nicht identifiziert.

Andros ist the northernmost island of the Cyclades. On a hill overlooking the bay of Gavrio stands the round tower of Aghios Petros, built in Hellenistic times (4th/3rd century BC) presumably as a watch tower and defensive structure. The approx. 20metres highg building is still very well preserved and can be visited on a beautiful scenic walk together with a modern chapel on the slope above the tower.
In 1894 a group of visitors including Wilhelm Dörpfeld (1853-1940, from 1886 to 1912 director of the DAI’s Athens Department, standing far left) made their way to the tower. The man sitting on the roof, which he accessed via four flights of stairs inside the tower, has not been identified.
