Prof. Dr. Mayke Wagner studierte Sinologie, Orientalische und Chinesische Archäologie in Berlin, Halle und Jinan (VR China). Sie wurde 1993 an der Universität Leipzig promoviert und habilitierte sich 2002 an der Universität Würzburg. Seit 2000 ist sie Wissenschaftliche Direktorin der Eurasien-Abteilung des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts und richtete in dessen Auftrag 2009 die Außenstelle Peking ein, die sie seither leitet. Im Jahr 2010 wurde sie Honorar-Professorin am Institut für Ostasiatische Kunstgeschichte der Freien Universität Berlin und 2012 Foreign Expert an der Chinesischen Akademie für Kulturerbe. In Kooperation mit zahlreichen Kolleginnen und Kollegen an Universitäten und Forschungseinrichtungen in Deutschland, China, Japan, Russland, Kanada und anderen Ländern forscht sie zu Themen der Archäologie, Kultur- und Umweltgeschichte Ostasiens von der letzten Eiszeit bis in die Neuzeit.
Mayke Wagner is Scientific Director of the Eurasia Department of the German Archaeological Institute and head of its Beijing Branch Office. She is specialist of Chinese and East Asian archaeology and PI of the several large projects. The most recent ones are “Silk Road Fashion: Vestimentary knowledge in central and eastern Asia from 2nd Millennium BC to 1st Millennium AD” focusing on technique oriented in-depth studies of garments preserved in arid eastern central Asia and their archaeological and environmental context; and “Bridging Eurasia: Settlement history and climate change in Northeast Asia since the last Ice Age” focusing on human environment interactions on Hokkaido, in the Russian Far East and Northeast China. Her research interests also include the revision of prehistoric chronologies, statistical analyses of archaeological mass data, and the evolution and transmission of knowledge in Eurasia.
