From 25 to 27 November, a delegation of researchers at the Romano-Germanic Commission (RGK) of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) have been visiting Skopje (Northern Macedonia) to kick-off a new joint research project on a jewel of Balkan Archaeology, the deserted Roman Colonia Flavia Scupinorum / Scupi.
The archaeological site of Scupi lies at the outskirts of modern Skopje and can be understood as its antique predecessor. During their visit, the DAI researchers participated in a series of meetings and round-tables with representatives of the Ministry for Culture and Tourism, the German Embassy Skopje, the City Museum of Skopje as well as the Archaeological Museum of the Republic of North Macedonia. The latter did also celebrate its 100th anniversary with an international conference, to which we warmly congratulate!
To facilitate all exchanges and joint initiatives in the field of research, development, instruction and the exchange of personnel, a Memorandum of Understanding between the Museum of the City of Skopje and the RGK has been signed.
We are very thankful for the warm welcome and extraordinary hospitality – and we are very much looking forward to this joint international cooperation!
