In the photo of the month from our archive, the hottest room of the Caǧaloǧlu Bath is visible. Our view focuses on the slim columns supporting the large dome of the bath, the navel stone in the centre, and the Ottoman Baroque-style fountains at the back. The sunlight gliding through the dome seems to make the empty bath even more desolate. A piece of paper left in the middle of the photo sneaked into these beauties without permission. We immediately run to the negative of the photo to find a clue if the palace photographers Sébah and Joaillier might have forgotten this tiny piece of paper there. Nevertheless, we come back empty-handed. Then this piece of paper must be a memory from our archive, where you could once develop photos in its own darkroom. The photographer who developed this photo must have torn this piece of paper from a film box and blocked the light coming from the aggrandizer. In this way, it would be possible to delete an unwanted scene in the photo during the printing process. Now we are curious; what was behind the paper that the photographer didn’t want us to see? The story could go on even longer, but let’s cut it out here!
Arşivimizden ayın fotoǧrafında Caǧaloǧlu Hamamı’nın sıcaklık bölümü gözüküyor. Hamamın büyük kubbesini taşıyan nazik sütunlar, ortadaki göbek taşı ve en arkadaki Osmanlı Baroǧu stilindeki çeşmelerden gözümüzü alamıyoruz. Kubbeden süzülen gün ışıǧı insansız hamamı sanki daha da ıssızlaştırıyor. Fotoǧrafın ortasında unutulmuş kaǧıt parçası ise izinsiz bir şekilde tüm bu güzelliklerin arasına katılmış. Bu minik kaǧıt parçasını burada acaba saray fotoǧrafçıları Sebah ve Joaillier mi unuttu diyerek bir ipucu bulmak için fotoǧrafın negatifine koşuyoruz. Ve elimiz boş dönüyoruz. O zaman belki de bu kaǧıt parçası, bir zamanlar karanlık odadada kendi fotoǧraflarını basan arşivimizden bir hatıradır. Baskı yapan kişi, bu kaǧıt parçasını hemen yanıbaşında duran film kutusundan koparıp agrandizörden gelen ışıǧı maskelemek için kullanmış olmalı. Böylece baskı sırasında fotoǧrafta istenmeyen bir görüntüyü silmek mümkün olacaktı. Şimdi de insan kaǧıdın arkasında fotoǧrafçının görmek istemediǧi ne vardı acaba diye merak ediyor? Hikaye daha da uzayabilir ama biz burada keselim.
