The Roman sarcophagus in our monthly photo unfortunately no longer exists. According to the testimony of Goltz Pasha who was also involved on the Baghdad Railway Project, the sarcophagus was originally transported on timbers to Bilecik (from a village half an hour away) and then placed beneath this magnificent plane tree. Goltz Pasha stated that the villagers proudly conveyed this event to him. He could not hide his surprise. After all, this account did not fit into the western orientalist image in his head; one which suggested that locals were insensitive to historical artefacts and had no interest in their preservation. According to the records in our archive, the photo was taken most probably by Berggren who worked together with Goltz Pasha documenting the construction of the railway. It is likely that both of them were together at the moment this photo was taken. In the 1930s attempts were made to change the location of the sarcophagus but it fell apart during the transfer. We know that different pieces were preserved in different parts of Bilecik but eventually disappeared. In the Bilecik documentary shot by TRT Channel in the 1970s you can see the front pieces of the sarcophagus laid side by side one final time.
Arşivimizden ayın fotoğrafının merkezinde görülen Roma Dönemi’ne ait bu güzel lahit, onu sarmalayan tüm bu insanlara rağmen korunamamış ve gizemli bir şekilde sırra kadem basmıştır. Bağdat Demiryolu‘nun inşasını denetleyen Goltz Paşa’nın şahitliğine göre lahit, 1800’lü yılların sonlarında yarım saatlik mesafedeki köyden kalasların üzerinde yürütülerek şehir meydanındaki bu güzel çınarın altına getirilmiştir. Goltz Paşa, köylülerin bu hadiseyi ona gururla aktardığını yazar ve şaşkınlığını gizleyemez. Ne de olsa kafasındaki tarihi eserlere duyarsız doğulu imgesine ters bir durum vardır burada. Fotoğrafa baktığımızda lahitin etrafını çeviren insanların ifadeleri Goltz Paşa’yı doğruluyor. Arşivimizdeki kayıtlara göre fotoğraf, muhtemelen Berggren tarafından çekilmiştir. Berggren’in de Bağdat Demiryolu çalışmalarını belgelemek üzere Golz Paşa ile birlikte çalıştığı bilinmekte. Belki de bu fotoğrafın çekildiği anda ikisi biraradaydı. Bilemiyoruz. Lahitin yeri 1930’larda tekrar değiştirilmek istenmiş; maalesef taşıma sırasında lahit kırılmıştır. Parçaları farklı yerlerde korunmaya alınmış fakat zaman içerisinde onlar da ortadan kaybolmuştur. En son 1970’lerde TRT’nin çektiği Bilecik belgeselinde ön yüze ait parçaların, son kez özenli bir şekilde yanyana konduğu görülmektedir.
