On 31.10.2024 Prof. Dr. Hermann Genz will start the Lecture Programme 2024/ 2025 of the Istanbul Department with a lecture on ‘Iron Age Burial Customs in Central Anatolia: the View from Boğazköy’.
The discussion of Iron Age burial customs in Central Anatolia has largely been dominated by the spectacular discoveries from the monumental tumuli from Gordion and Ankara. However, burials of the ordinary population have been largely ignored. The discovery of 30 Iron Age burials in the Lower City of Bogazköy between 1956 and 2011 sheds interesting light on the burial customs and funerary offerings of the non-elite Iron Age population of the region.

This hitherto largely unpublished cemetery will be briefly presented, and then compared to other Iron Age funerary assemblages from Central Anatolia. A special focus of the presentation will lie on tracing the origin of the practice of cremation in Central Anatolia.
The hybrid event will be held in English.
