Our next evening lecture takes us to the west coast of Türkiye. We are delighted to welcome Prof. Dr. Christof Berns (Hamburg), who will discuss current research on the genesis of the urban space of Miletus.
The Ionian megapolis of Miletus is a perfect example of a planned city. The regular urban plan has often been associated with the theorist Hippodamus and even seen as an expression of democratic concepts in the 5th century BC. More recently, however, it has been suggested that it was an initiative of one of the Milesian tyrants and reflected an archaic ‘Great Miletus’.

This lecture will present current research on the urban development of Archaic and Classical Miletus. In recent years, a research project has systematically investigated the long-term genesis of the urban space of the polis for the first time. This has provided not only new information on the dating of the street grid, but also insights into its implementation. The results have changed our view of the decentralised processes in urban space design at Miletus. (Türkçe Özet)
The hybrid event will be held in German. To attend in person, please register by 15:00 on the day of the lecture.
