The history of archaeology in the Republic of Türkiye begins before the foundation of the Republic and dates back to the 19th century, with the enactment of the first laws for the protection of the ancient cultural heritage of the Ottoman Empire. With the founding of the Republic by Atatürk, archaeology also took on a new significance as a force for identity. This is also reflected in the targeted foundation of new research institutions, universities, and museums. At the same time, the first systematic excavations, the organisation of scientific events, the publication of excavation reports, and the establishment of museums were specifically supported.
The lecture will focus on the development of archaeology, excavation methods, research questions, and the role of museums over the last 100 years. It will conclude with a look at current and future challenges, including the completion of the inventory of the cultural heritage of Türkiye.
