As part of the conference “Amphoras and the Archaeology of Ancient Economies (8th to the 1st Centuries BC): Mobilizing Knowledge in a New Generation”, we are pleased to announce the evening lecture by Prof. Dr. Gonca Cankardeş Şenol (İzmir) on “Recent Amphora Studies in Türkiye / Anatolia”.

In Türkiye, amphora studies started to gain momentum in the 1980s thanks to studies of amphora production sites along the entire Aegean and Mediterranean coasts by J.-Y. Empereur and M. Picon. Excavations at the amphora workshops of Knidos and its vicinity increased the attention and interest in amphoras and their stamps among Turkish researchers. In addition to the documentation of amphora finds from numerous sites across Türkiye, we had the chance to access the amphora collections in Alexandria, Egypt. These collections became a training ground for students, who have gone on to publish the amphoras and stamps unearthed throughout Türkiye. Concurrently, both through online databases and in print we have documented the finds in Alexandria. Thus, we have revealed previously unknown commercial connections between ancient cities in Anatolia, the preferences and demands of consumption cities, and new amphora producers.
The hybrid event will be held in English.
