Lecture Announcement: KİMYAHANE. DIE GESCHICHTE DES ERSTEN KONSERVIERUNGSLABORS DER TÜRKEI UND SEINE ZUSAMMENARBEIT MIT DEM BERLINER CHEMIELABOR

Our evening lecture series continues in 2025! The first lecture in the new year will be given by Dr. Vildan Yarlıgaş (Istanbul) on the topic ‘Kimyahane. Die Geschichte des ersten Konservierungslabors der Türkei und seine Zusammenarbeit mit dem Berliner Chemielabor’.

The restoration and conservation of artefacts based on scientific and modern methods began in the early Republican period of Turkey. However, the research on the processes and methods used during this period is still quite limited. The lecture will focus on the foundation, activities and experts of Turkey’s first conservation laboratory, known as ‘Kimyahane’ (The House of Chemistry), established in 1936 as part of the Istanbul Archaeological Museums. With this focus, the study aims to present the history of the restoration of museum artefacts in Turkey by the institutions and experts who carried out this work from the late 19th to the late 20th century. In addition, the co-operation and relationship between the Chemical Laboratory of the Royal Museums in Berlin and the Kimyahane will be shown.
