Das Bild zeigt den Petersdom vom Gianicolo-Hügel aus. Es entstand um 1900 zu einer Zeit, als der Vatikan und seine Umgebung noch weniger stark bebaut waren. Auch aus der Entfernung dominiert der Petersdom auf dem Bild die Szene. Der Gianicolo wurde im späten 19. Jahrhundert zunehmend strukturiert, auch als Erinnerungsort für den Kampf der revolutionären Verbände um Giuseppe Garibaldi für die Römische Republik von 1848/49. Garibaldi wurde von französischen und spanischen Truppen geschlagen, die vom Papst zu Hilfe gerufen worden waren. Bald beherrschten sie Rom vom strategisch bedeutenden Gianicolo aus und gaben die Kontrolle der Stadt wieder in die Hand des Kirchenstaates.
#ThrowbackThursday: Gianicolo hill in Rome
The photograph shows St Peter’s Cathedral from Gianicolo hill. It was taken around 1900 at a time when the Vativan and the surrounding area were less built up than they are today. Even from this distance St Peter’s still dominiates the scene. in the late 19th century the Gianicolo (Janiculum) was increasingly modified, among other things as a place of remembrance for the struggle by Giuseppe Garibaldi’s revolutionary forces for the Roman Republic in 1848/49. Garibaldi was defeated by French and Spanish troops after the Pope had appealed to them for aid. They then ruled Rome from the strategic position of the Gianicolo, before returning control of the city to the Holy See.
