. القديس سمعان العمودي، وتعتبر من أهم مواقع المدن المنسية أو الميتة، لمكانتها وقيمتها، أدرجت على لائحة التراث العالمي في العام ٢٠١١

ST. SIMEON CASTLE (SIMEON CASTLE)
I lived in a village close to Simeon Castle, and most of our family and school tours brought us to the castle. However, on every visit to the castle, I was stunned by its beauty and grandeur. I still see it as glorious even though time has left a mark on it. The effect added to its grandeur, and at the same time gives it a beautiful charm. The castle is situated at a high peak and overlooks a vast plain crossed by a river in the middle of it, creating a wonderful picturesque painting. I was proud of its old walls, and I saw tourists come from everywhere to see it and enjoy its details. However, I now look at its pictures after a lot of damage was done to it during the war. The castle is still standing as I knew it, and it is confident that peace will be achieved.

قلعة القديس سمعان (قلعة سمعان) كنت أعيش في قريةٍ قريبةٍ من قلعة سمعان ، وكانت معظم جولاتنا الأسرية والمدرسية نحو القلعة . ومع ذلك ، في كل زيارةٍ للقلعة ، أذهل بجمالها
وعظمتها. وما زلت أرى أنها مجدٌ على الرغم من أن الزمان قد ترك علامةً عليها. زاد التأثير من عظمتها، وفي نفس الوقت يضفي عليها سحرًا جميلً. تقع
القلعة في ذروةٍ عاليةٍ وتطل على سهل شاسعٍ يخترقه نهر في وسطها ، لخلق لوحةٍ خلابةٍ رائعة. كنت أقف فخورةً بجدرانها القديمة، وأرى السياح يأتون
من كل مكان لرؤيتها، والاستمتاع بتفاصيلها. ومع ذلك أنظر الآن إلى صورها بعد وقوع الكثير من الضرر لها أثناء الحرب. إنها لا تزال قائمةً كما عرفتها ،
واثقةً من أن السلام سيتحقق.

Dir Samaan, also known as Qa’laat Samaan, Simon’s Castle. I was in sixth grade when I visited this site for the first time with a group of friends on a school trip. It was just a journey of amusement and entertainment. Our teacher told us about this edifice, and we were told many stories, but the most controversial story at the time was the story of that saint, who has been staying on a pillar for a long period of time and has not stepped down from it.
The main question that appeared in our minds was how he had been able to eliminate all his human needs: eating, drinking and going to the toilette, if he did not climb down from his column for such a long time…. We discussed that question a lot and found many solutions. We have wasted a lot of time looking for solutions to this – as we thought – important issue.
We continued our journey and were happy with it, and now I remember that trip, and I regret not having seen and checked all parts of the site, because I will not be able to visit it again – soon.

دير سمعان
أو ما يطلقون عليه اسم قلعة سمعان، كنت بالصف السادس عندما زرت هذا الموقع لأول مرةٍ، مع مجموعةٍ من الاصدقاء برحلةٍ مدرسيةٍ. كانت مجرد
رحلةً للتسلية واللهو، لقد حدثتنا معلمتنا عن هذا الصرح، وقصت علينا العديد من الحكايات ولكن أكثر قصةٍ أثارت الجدل حينها، هي قصة ذلك القديس
الذي اعتكف على أحد الأعمدة لفترة طويلة من الزمن، ولم ينزل عنه. حيث كان السؤال الذي شغل بالنا في وقتها، هو كيف استطاع قضاء حاجاته الانسانية
من أكلٍ وشربٍ والذهاب لبيت الخلاء إن لم يكن ينزل عن هذا العمود كل تلك المدة….؟
ناقشنا تلك الفكرة كثيراً وأوجدنا حلولاً كثيرةً. لقد أضعنا الكثير من الوقت، ونحن نبحث عن حلول لتلك القضية التي شغلت بالنا.
أتممنا رحلتنا وسعدنا بها، وها أنا أتذكر تلك الرحلة، وأندم على عدم تفحصي لجميع أجزاء الموقع، لأنه لم يتسن لي زيارته مرةً أخرى.

Dead cities
I had never heard of them – until I was twenty-five – I had never heard the phrase dead cities …
Since then, I felt a great determination to visit them, to learn about their character and understand their history.
They are no famous sites, they are remains of a civilization that ceased to exist after its heyday. Not much was written about it, nor was it published, unlike other historical sites and cultural heritage.
What happened? Why are they called dead? Many inquiries were in my head.
When I visited them, I saw them as a human being embalmed, preserving most of the buildings in full detail – only the wooden roof joists were missing. Their streets were empty, and the fragrant histories were lacking.
Just simple and caring interests, to be a destination for hundreds or thousands of visitors.
Until now, I have a sense of responsibility to search for their real people, or their grandchildren.
To ask them: What happened? What is the reason? Why did you leave your homes? Why did you not come back yet?
I am sure, I will find them one day, and they may return. Sometimes I dream to to see these cities wake up after a long sleep … like princesses sleep in children’s fairy tales. However, who wants to life in ruins?
المدن الميتة
لم أكن أسمع عنها سابقا – حتى تجاوزت الخامسة والعشرين من عمري – لأسمع عبارة المدن الميتة… عندها، كان عندي إصرارٌ كبيرٌ لزيارتها، والتعرف على شخصيتها ومعرفة طابعها، وفهم تاريخها.
هي مواقع ليست مشهورةً، هي حضارةٌ اندثرت بعد أن كانت في أوجها، لم يُكتبْ عنها الكثير، ولم يتم النشر عنها كغيرها من المواقع التاريخية والإرث
الثقافي.
ماذا جرى؟ لماذا هي ميتة؟ استفهاماتٌ كثيرةٌ دارت برأسي.
عند زيارتي لها، رأيتها كإنسان تم تحنيطه، فهي تحتفظ بغالبية مبانيها – بكامل التفاصيل – لا ينقصها سوى الأسقف الخشبية الجملونية، شوارعها فارغة،
وعبق التاريخ الفواح يملأ ثناياها.
فقط اهتماماتٌ بسيطةٌ وعناية، لتكون مقصداً لمئات أو الأف الزوار.
حتى الأن ينتابني شعور المسؤولية للبحث عن أهلها الحقيقيين، أو أحفادهم، لنسألهم : ماذا جرى ؟ ما هو السبب؟ لماذا هجرتم دياركم؟ ولماذا لم ترجعوا
حتى الان؟
أنا متأكد أني سأجدهم يوما، وقد يرجعون.
أحلم أحيانا بأن تلك المدن ستستيقظ بعد ثبات طويل … يشبه ثبات الأميرات في قصص الأطفال الخيالية. ومع ذلك ، من يريد الحياة في حالة خراب؟
This photo reminds me completely of the year 2010, when I suddenly visited this place. It was my first visit there, but I am touched by it and still remember its details so far.
I met a young man performing compulsory military service near my residence, who was cut off from money and wanted to return to his home. His home was not close, so I decided to take him with my car to his village….

هذه الصورة، تذكرني تماماً بعام ٢٠١٠
حيث أني زرت هذا المكان بشكل مفاجئ، كانت زيارتي الأولى له ، لكني تأثرت بها ومازلت أذكر تفاصيلها حتى الآن. التقيت بشاب يؤدي خدمة
العسكرية الإلزامية، بالقرب من مسكني، كان مقطوعاً من المال، ويريد العودة إلى بيته، بيته ليس بالقريب ، فهو في إحدى القرى المجاورة لنا.
لم يكن يمتلك مالاً للعودة، فقررت اصطحابه بسيارتي إلى بيته، صعدنا السيارة وبدأ يدلني على طريق قريته .

During my visit, something disturbed me, and I noticed it by walking around the house and the field: the man was sitting all day, and the woman was the one doing the work in the field and at home.
The man did nothing but sit and smoke, and his working role was limited to the delivery of agricultural products to the market, after they were grown, harvested and packaged by women. The man made no effort in his work, not even in his home.
It was their custom to let women do all the work.

خلال زيارتي تلك، أزعجني شيء ما، لاحظته من خلال تجولي في المسكن والحقل، ذلك الشيء هو : أن الرجل يبق جالساً طوال النهار، والمرأة هي من تقوم
بالعمل، في الحقل والمنزل.
يكتفي الرجل بالجلوس والتدخين، ويقتصر دوره على توصيل المنتجات الزراعية إلى السوق، بعد زراعتها وحصادها وتعبئتها من قبل النساء، أي لايبذل
الرجل أي مجهودٍ في عمله، ولا حتى في منزله.
كان العرف عندهم، العمل للنساء فقط .

When I saw the picture, I felt sad. I felt the monuments crying. I remembered my childhood: We used to go to our village, we saw the shepherd, and the women of the village who worked with the men side by side.
The village was like a big house, their joy was one, and their sadness was one. They used to envision together, they were one hand against everyone who left. There was no one who was jealous of anyone, or someone who gloated over the other. If someone would fall into calamity, everyone helped him and stood with him.
Indeed, that picture expresses the ancient history of Syria. God willing, those days that we miss so much will return, and its people who have spread throughout the world will return, transmitting their culture and morals.

عندما شاهدت الصورة ، شعرت بالحزن ، شعرت بأن الأثار تبكي ،تذكرت طفولتي ، كنا نذهب إلى قريتنا، نرى الراعي ، ونساء القرية اللواتي يعملن مع
الرجال جنباً إلى جنب .
كانت القرية كالبيت الكبير ، فرحهم واحد، وحزنهم واحد ، كانوا يتصورون معاً، كانوا يداً واحدةً ضد كل غادر، لم يكن هناك من يغار من أحد ، أو من
يشمت من الأآخر ، من يقع بمصيبة ، يساعده الجميع، ويقفون معه.
فعلاً عبرت تلك الصورة عن تاريخ سورية العريق، ان شاء الله ستعود تلك الأيام التي نفتقدها كثيراً ، وسيعود أهلها الذين انتشروا في بقاع الأرض ، ناقلين
ثقافتهم وأخلاقهم.
